Answers

(All answers can be found in the Summer 1999 issue.)
  1. Nearly 500 congregations. (page 43)
  2. Almost 50 years. (page 43)
  3. 880 congregations. (page 46)
  4. 2,100 pieces of sheet music, songsters, and other materials. (page 46)
  5. More than 2,000 years. It is considered so important to the Jewish community that its construction once took precedence over the building of either a house of study or a house of worship. (page 80)
  6. Psalm 126. (page 68)
  7. More than $156,000, all of which has been funneled directly into relief and reconstruction efforts by the Jewish Coalition for Disaster Relief, providing food to workers repairing and reconstructing homes, schools, clinics, water systems, roads, and irrigation systems; direct assistance to farmers who have lost crops and animals; loans to help women reestablish their businesses; medical supplies such as antibiotics and first-aid kits; funds to rebuild the synagogue in Tegucigalpa, Honduras; and more. (pp.69-70)
  8. About 60 psalms, which temple member Sam Shermis is inscribing on 8x11 inch acid-free cotton fiber paper with acid-free ink. The works will be placed in a special volume to be preserved on Beth HaTephila's bimah in a hand-crafted wooden cabinet by Allan Abrams, a congregant who designs Torah stands. "We decided to have our own inscribed Book of Psalms, just as some congregations have a special Torah inscribed," explains Brenda Abrams, chair of the temple's fundraising committee. Sam copies the first line of the psalm at the top in Hebrew, then writes the entire poem in English. Special dedications are noted at the bottom of each page. About 60 psalms have been donated thus far, and Shermis expects to complete the inscriptions by the year 2000. (p. 68)
  9. 188 acres of land, lakes, island, fields, hills, and forest in the heartland of Ontario, Canada. (p.68)
  10. 15 new congregations (p. 46)
